Donald L. Ferris
Donald L. Ferris was born in Rye, NY on March 28, 1926 a son of Henry and Catherine (Bartehan) Ferris. He had three sisters: Doris, Joann and Betty.
In Rye his family lived at 614 Forest Avenue and were members of Presbyterian Church. Donald was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1944.
He enlisted in the Army on June 23, 1944, in Fort Dix, New Jersey, during World War II. He was 18 years old. Don served with the 554th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion.
After the war he attended Sampson College and was graduated from the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. Donald married Loretta Anna Brevio in Mamaroneck, New York, on June 8, 1952, when he was 26 years old.
Donald worked at Sikorsky Aircraft and retired after 33 years of service. During his distinguished career as a design engineer, Don was the holder of 41 patents and was awarded with a lifetime achievement award in engineering named in his honor.
A 50 year resident of Newtown, he was a member of the Newtown Lions Club and active in local politics.
Donald L. Ferris, age 83, of Newtown, died peacefully Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Craig Avery of Sturbridge, Massachusetts.
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, Donald was survived by his grandchildren, Alaina, Heather and Bryan Avery; a sister, Doris Delfosse; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta and son Chet and by two sisters, Joanne Finley and Betty Jane Ruffner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown on Monday February 1, 2010
Interment with military honors followed in St. Rose Cemetery.
